Welcome to the Fox Lane World Language Department!

Learning a new language is about so much more than memorizing vocabulary or mastering grammar. It is an opportunity to connect with people, explore new cultures, and see the world through different perspectives. As technology, travel, and our global economy continue to bring people closer together, the ability to communicate across languages and cultures has become more valuable than ever.

In our World Language classrooms, students develop the skills and confidence to communicate in meaningful ways while gaining a deeper appreciation for the diverse communities that make up our world. Our teachers create engaging, experiential learning opportunities that encourage students to use language authentically, think critically, and build connections between cultures. We believe these experiences help prepare our students not only for college and careers, but also for active participation as informed, compassionate global citizens.

The World Language Department offers courses in French, Italian, and Spanish. Students may begin their language study in sixth grade at Fox Lane Middle School and continue through a seven-year sequence in each language. Our courses range from introductory classes that build a strong foundation in communication to advanced courses that help students achieve high levels of proficiency.

In addition to our traditional World Language pathways, Fox Lane offers a unique Spanish Language Arts program designed for multilingual learners, heritage speakers, and students continuing from Bedford's Mount Kisco Elementary Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) program. This pathway allows students to continue developing advanced literacy and academic skills in Spanish while celebrating the linguistic and cultural assets they bring to our classrooms. By honoring students' bilingual identities and building on their existing strengths, we help them become confident, biliterate communicators prepared for success in college, careers, and an increasingly multilingual world.

Our curriculum is aligned with the New York State Learning Standards for World Languages and emphasizes the development of the four essential communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through authentic texts, media, and real-world communication, students learn to use language with increasing confidence and proficiency while exploring the rich histories, traditions, and perspectives of cultures around the world.

Above all, language learning should be meaningful, engaging, and accessible to every student. Whether students continue studying a language through Advanced Placement, use it in their future careers, or simply develop a lifelong appreciation for other cultures, we hope their experiences in our program inspire curiosity, empathy, and a love of learning that extends far beyond the classroom.
