SCIENCE OF NATURAL DISASTERS (SUNY)

(1 unit; 4 college credits available through SUNY Oneonta) Course provides an overview of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, tsunamis, mass movement, meteorite impact and severe weather (including hurricanes and longer term climate change). Students will learn about the geological and meteorological processes responsible for producing these disasters through the use of various national and international data sources, as well as local and national case studies. Lab experiences will provide opportunities for the application of the scientific method. In addition, this course will demonstrate how science can influence personal, societal, and governmental decisions.
Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Biology and Chemistry

AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

(1 unit) The AP Environmental Science course is designed to be the equivalent of an introductory college course in Environmental Science that includes a strong laboratory component. Emphasis is placed on the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies necessary to understand and evaluate interrelationships in the natural world.  Students will learn to identify and analyze environmental problems, both natural and manmade, from a "systems" perspective, and to evaluate the risks associated with these problems.  Finally, students will explore alternatives and solutions to the identified problems. The course culminates with a final exam and the AP Examination in May.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Biology
Suggested Guidelines: 75+ on the following Regents exams; Biology, Earth Science, and Chemistry.
