Mathematics Program Overview
The mathematics program is designed to align with Bedford’s Vision, Mission, and Core Beliefs and the New York State Learning Standards. It incorporates the primary design principles of the standards:
- Focus: the specific mathematical content that builds conceptual understanding at each grade level.
- Coherence: progression of mathematics within and across grade levels, including the development of concepts within a topic
- Rigor: development of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application of learning embedded in the standards. (NYSLS in Mathematics Guidance Document, 2020).
All mathematics classes routinely use the standards for mathematical practices. These practices encourage students to explore mathematical concepts using multiple problem-solving strategies, collaborate, and participate in mathematical discourse using mathematical vocabulary. Students routinely have opportunities to practice and apply mathematics and engage in productive struggle. As a result, students will become flexible and independent thinkers and grow in confidence in their mathematical ability.
The BCSD Mathematics Program is grounded in Standards-based, State defined curriculum, through locally developed units of study developed by Bedford mathematics teachers. The following curriculum areas have well-defined units of study including content, skills, and assessments.
